Premier League round 2 preview

Quickly, 3 take-aways from the opening round:

3 titles for the opening day losers  Arsenal’s 0-2 home loss against West Ham was the biggest surprise of the first round of the Premier League.  And they might have ruined their title chances there as in 23 editions of Premier League football no team ever won the title after having lost the first game in their own stadium. Manchester United is the only team to have won the title after having lost the season opener, but in all 3 cases it was an away game (92/93, 95/96, 12/13).

12,00 upset If you would have placed a bet on WHU before that season opener at the Emirates you would now be 12 pounds richer for every pound laid. In the 2014/15 season there was only 1 higher upset according to the bookmakers: Stoke’s win at Man City for 18,00.

3rd highest win for City Manchester City got a confortable start winning their season opener at West Brom. It was the 4th time City started the league with a win by 3+ goals. In 2 of those 3 previous cases they won the title. City’s biggest wins in season openers:
2013/14] 4-0 home vs Newcastle – Champions
2011/12] 4-0 home vs Swansea – Champions
2003/04] 3-0 away vs Charlton – (16th)
Dark note: as you can see, the last time Man City started with a 3-0 away win they ended 16th..

And a preview for this weekend:

32 wins for Man U Manchester United beat the Spurs in their opening round, claiming their 31 Premier League win against them. There is only one team in Premier League history that has beaten an opponent more often than that. And of course that is Manchester United. They registered 32 victories against Aston Villa. Exactly, the opening game of this Premier League weekend. The numbers:

9000 After the first round 8995 games have been played since the top-tier in the UK was rebranded to the Premier League as we know it today. Meaning that 1 of the games that start on Saturday at 16:00 will be the 9000th game in history!

8 in a row Manchester City won their last 6 games of the 2014/15 season and started this season with an away win at West Brom. It is for the 6th time they managed 7 consecutive Premier League wins. Five times the streak ended there, and only once they also added an 8th back-to-back victory: in 2013/2014, before winning the trophy. This weekend they’ll play Chelsea at home; with a win they would equal their record.

22 losses against Chelsea No team have defeated the Citizens more often in their own stadium then Chelsea: 11 times in 18 games. In total Chelsea sum 22 victories over City. Only Arsenal can equal those amounts. The numbers:

H2H: Man City - Chelsea
H2H: Man City – Chelsea

9 out of 10 for Mou Chelsea did not lose any of the lat 4 BPL matches against Man City (2W, 2D). Mourinho even has a better record playing with Chelsea against the Citizens: after having lost their first meeting  he now records an unbeaten run of 9 games (6 wins, 3 draws).

13 without a loss Liverpool, who ended in 2nd place the last two times they won their 2 opening games (2008/09 & 2013/14), are receiving Bournemouth on Monday. There is some hope as they did not lose any of the last 13 games at Anfield against recently promoted teams. They won 9 times and drew 4 games, but never scored over 3 goals and maintained a clean sheet in 9 cases. Also, Liverpool did not lose their first BPL match at Anfield Road since a 2-1 loss against Chelsea in 2003.
